Learn Quilting Basics and Make Your First Quilt

Join instructor Janice White for a three-part beginner’s quilting class at Dark Star Fabrics. You will learn the basics and receive personal instruction in a small friendly class limited to eight participants. You will make a lap quilt using an easy versatile block, the Disappearing Nine Patch. The class will include detailed written instructions.

Introduction to Quilting
Saturday, January 20, 2018
1:00 – 3:00

Start by learning good quilting practices and habits. Understand how to read a pattern. Get comfortable using rotary cutters and rulers while cutting pieces for the quilt you will be making.

Class #2
Hands On
Saturday, January 27, 2018
1:00 – 3:00

Design your quilt layout. Learn to correctly size your pieces and blocks. Accurately stitch your blocks while learning helpful shortcuts like chain piecing, pressing and nesting.

Class #3
Putting It Together
Saturday, February 3, 2018
1:00 – 3:00

Finish assembling your quilt. Add your border. Learn about the quilt sandwich, various quilting methods and binding techniques.


Janice White, a life-long Phillips resident, has been quilting since the 70’s. She has made hundreds of quilts for her family and charity and especially enjoys hand stitching and hand quilting. She was one of the founding members of the Narrow Gauge Quilt Group in Phillips.


Classes will take place in the classroom at Dark Star Fabrics, 30 Main Street, Phillips, Maine.

What You Will Need

When you sign up, you will receive a list of the tools (rulers, scissors, etc.) and fabrics you will need. You can bring your own tools and fabrics or purchase them from Dark Star Fabrics at a reduced price. For Classes #2 and #3, you can bring your own sewing machine or use a Dark Star Fabrics sewing machine at no additional charge.


As noted above, these classes are sold out. If you are enrolled, your one-time $30 payment will cover all three classes. Please pay at the start of the first class.
